Windows 10: Force Windows 11 Compatibility Re-Check

Updated October 21, 2026

Overview

Use these steps when the schtasks command fails with "could not find the file specified." That error means the Compatibility Appraiser task is missing, disabled, or named differently on your build. Run all commands in an administrator window.

Step 1: Check whether the task exists

In an admin PowerShell window:

Get-ScheduledTask -TaskPath "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\*"

If you see "Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" listed, run it with:

Start-ScheduledTask -TaskPath "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\" -TaskName "Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"

If it is listed as Disabled, enable it first with Enable-ScheduledTask using the same path and name.

Step 2: If the task doesn't exist, run the appraiser directly

In an admin Command Prompt:

sc start DiagTrack

CompatTelRunner.exe -m:appraiser.dll -f:DoScheduledTelemetryRun

The first line makes sure the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service is running, which the appraiser needs. Wait a few minutes, then run the following and check Windows Update again:

usoclient StartScan

Step 3: If Windows Update still shows the stale result

The appraiser may be disabled or missing on your system, so Windows Update could keep using its old verdict. In that case:

A. Reset the Windows Update cache. In an admin Command Prompt:

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start bits

net start wuauserv

Then check for updates again.

B. Use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Download it from microsoft.com/software-download/windows11. It does its own fresh requirements check and doesn't depend on the Windows Update verdict, so it's usually the quickest way past this. Back up your files first. You can run setup from within Windows to keep your apps and data.

If something still fails

If PowerShell shows the task is missing, or CompatTelRunner.exe errors out, note the exact error message. If the Installation Assistant's own check fails, it will name the specific requirement it is tripping on.
